CorelDraw

CorelDraw is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Corel Corporation of Ottawa, Canada. It is also the name of Corel's Graphics Suite, which bundles CorelDraw with a bitmap image editor, Corel Photo Paint, and other graphics-related programs see below. The latest version is designated X6 equivalent to version 16, and was released in March 2012.

A drawing program for Windows and the Mac from Corel. Introduced in 1989, CorelDRAW has been Corel's flagship program, which became very popular due to its speed and features. Supported platforms

CorelDraw was originally developed for Microsoft Windows 3 and currently runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows, and Windows 8. The current version, X6, was released on 20 March 2012.

Versions for Mac OS and Mac OS X were at one time available, but due to poor sales these were discontinued. The last port for Linux was version 9 released in 2000, it did not run natively; instead, it used a modified version of Wine to run and the last version for OS X was version 11. Also, up until version 5, CorelDraw was developed for Windows 3.1x, CTOS and OS/2.
 

Characteristic features

Several innovations to vector-based illustration originated with CorelDraw: a node-edit tool that operates differently on different objects, fit text-to-path, stroke-before-fill, quick fill stroke color selection palettes, perspective projections, mesh fills and complex gradient fills. CorelDraw differentiates itself from its competitors in a number of ways,

The first is its positioning as a graphics suite, rather than just a vector graphics program. A full range of editing tools allow the user to adjust contrast, color balance, change the format from RGB to CMYK, add special effects such as vignettes and special borders to bitmaps. Bitmaps can also be edited more extensively using Corel Photo Paint, opening the bitmap directly from CorelDraw and returning to the program after saving. It also allows a laser to cut out any drawings.

CorelDraw is capable of handling multiple pages along with multiple master layers. Multipage documents are easy to create and edit and the Corel print engine allows for booklet and other imposition so even simple printers can be used for producing finished documents. One of the useful features for single and multi-page documents is the ability to create linked text boxes across documents that can be re sized and moved while the text itself resets and flows through the boxes. Useful for creating and editing multi-article newsletters etc.

Smaller items, like business cards, invitations etc., can be designed to their final page size and imposed to the printer's sheet size for cost-effective printing. An additional print-merge feature using a spreadsheet or text merge file allows full personalization for many things like numbered raffle tickets, individual invitations, membership cards and more.

CorelDraw competitors include Adobe Illustrator and Xara Photo & Graphic Designer. Although all of these are vector-based illustration programs, the user experience differs greatly between them. While these programs will read their native file types and vice versa, the translation is rarely perfect. CorelDraw can open Adobe PDF files: Adobe Page Maker, Microsoft Publisher and Word, and other programs can print documents to PDF using the Adobe PDF Writer printer driver, which CorelDraw can then open and edit every aspect of the original layout and design. Current Version

          The release current as of August 2010 is CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5, and it is the 15th version of the software that was first released in 1989. The amount of different file formats CorelDRAW can work with has been extended to over 60 in this edition, with various Adobe file types being added to its capabilities. The Export for Web command has been enhanced, as has the process for starting a new file, which guide users through a setup process rather than with a default blank page. Color management has also been improved, with industry standards being employed to create a profile-based color management system so that onscreen colors can accurately represent finished colors in a variety of outputs.

Over time, additional components were developed or acquired and bundled with CorelDraw. The list of bundled packages usually changes somewhat from one release to the next, though there are several mainstays that have remained in the package for many releases now, including Power Trace a bitmap to vector graphic converter, Photo-Paint a bitmap graphic editor, and Capture a screen capture utility.

CorelDraw Graphics Suite is a software package of design tools designed to run on Windows operating systems. The main application in this large package of tools is CorelDraw, which is used for vector designs and layouts. Corel Photo-Paint is designed to retouch and edit digital photos, and other apps in the package can do tasks such as screen grabs, collaborate with co-workers, and more.

The CorelDraw interface has the familiar Windows options with pull-down menus for File, Edit, and View. Main functions like effects are easily applied with large buttons on the left of the main window. New effects for this release include Smear, Twirl, Attract, and Repel. We liked that you'll instantly see a preview of what the effect will do to your drawing and that you can use drag and drop to select a specific area for effects. If you don't like the look of the effect, it can be switched off just as quickly. Also helpful were the many professionally designed templates to easily create items like posters, business cards, and newsletters.

The other main app in the suite is Corel Photo-Paint, and it operates in a similar manner with a similar layout. We used the photo editor for a digital photo that looked rather blurry and unfocused and were pleasantly surprised at the improvements to the image just using the automated tools setting of the software.

This is a powerful graphics suite, but in our tests, we did experience some stability issues, and the program crashed on one occasion. It is also geared toward the professional user, with a price tag that reflects this. The 15-day trial is on the short side, but with the familiar Windows-style layout this should be long enough for most people to get a full sense of the suite's design tools.

CDR file format

In its first versions, the CDR file format was a completely proprietary file format primarily used for vector graphic drawings and developed by Corel Corporation, recognizable by the first two bytes of the file being WL. Starting with Corel Draw 3, the file format changed to a Resource Interchange File Format envelope, recognizable by the first four bytes of the file being RIFF, and a CDR*vrsn in bytes 9 to 15, with the asterisk "*" being in early versions just a blank, and beginning with Corel Draw 4, the version number of the writing program in hexadecimal "4" meaning version 4, "D" meaning version 14. The actual data chunk of the RIFF remains a Corel proprietary format.

There is no publicly available CDR file format specification.

Other CorelDraw file formats include CorelDraw Compressed, CorelDraw Template and Corel Presentation Exchange.

 In December 2006 the sK1 open source project team started to reverse-engineer the CDR format. The results and the first working snapshot of the CDR importer were presented at the Libre Graphics Meeting 2007 conference taking place in May 2007 in Montreal. Later on the team parsed the structure of other Corel formats with the help of the open source CDR Explorer. As of 2008, the sK1 project claims to have the best import support for CorelDraw file formats among open source software programs. The sK1 project developed also the UniConvertor, a command line open source tool which supports conversion from CorelDraw ver.7-X4 formats CDR CDT CCX CDRX CMX to other formats. UniConvertor is also used in Inkscape and Scribus open source projects as an external tool for CorelDraw files importing. 

In 2007, Microsoft blocked CDR file format in Microsoft

applications. Office 2003 with the release of Service Pack 3 for Office 2003. Microsoft later apologized for inaccurately blaming the CDR file format and other formats for security problems in Microsoft Office and released some tools for solving this problem.

In 2012 the joint LibreOffice re-lab team implemented libcdr, a library for reading CDR files from v1 to the currently latest X6 version and CMX files. The library has extensive support for shapes and their properties, including support for color management and spot colors, and has a basic support for text. The library provides a built-in converter to SVG, and a converter to Open Document is provided by writer perfect package. Xara Photo & Graphic Designer is an image editing program incorporating photo editing and vector illustration tools created by the British software company Xara, which was acquired by German company MAGIX AG in 2007, and now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary. Xara Xtreme LX was an earlier open source version for Linux.

Manipulating Objects

The basic element of a CorelDRAW illustration is the vector object. Objects can be manipulated in a number of ways to create different elements in your drawing. The lines that form an object are called vectors and those vectors are connected with nodes. Vector drawing applications create objects mathematically. Predefined objects include rectangles, ellipses, polygons, and curves. Each vector of the image is defined by the nodes. These react in set ways to changes. Some manipulations cannot be applied to defined shapes. To change predefined objects, the objects must be changed to a series of lines or curves. You will cover this under the command Convert to Curves. 

             CorelDRAW creates two basic types of objects – open and closed. Open objects include straight lines and curved lines. Closed objects include circles, rectangles, squares, polygons, and freehand drawings. All objects can be 'filled' with an interior fill style, however, unless the object is closed, the fill will not appear. 
 

Transform Dockers and Property Bar

Two of the main tools for manipulation of objects are the Transform Dockers that you covered in Chapter 5 and the Shape Tool. Many of the elements of these functions are also found on the Property Bar. As with all CorelDRAW operations, functions are accessed many different ways. 

Moving nodes on curved lines

Select the curved line at the bottom of the page.

Select a node.
The Status bar will display the characteristics of the node. If necessary, right click on the Status Bar and choose Refresh.

Select one of the control points and move it.
The control points are the blue dotted lines that extend from the node. You used them when you created an object with the Bezier Tool.

Move other control points and notice what happens.

Place the cursor over the line and move it. 

Proportional vs. non-proportional buttons

One of the more confusing elements of CorelDRAW are the locks for proportional and non-proportional changes. These buttons are found on the Property Bar. Proportional changes keep the width and height of an object in direct relation to each other as they were in the original object. In other words, if you make a square an inch larger, it will remain a square, not become a rectangle. Non-proportional allows you to change one direction's dimension without affecting the other dimension.
 

Converting line segments

Objects created with straight lines do not have control points. To change a line to a curve, you will use the node at the end of the line. This will add control points along the lines. Once they are activated you can create a curve by moving them. 

·        Select the red line.  Be sure you still have the Shape Tool selected. 

·        Select all the nodes with the Select all button. 

·        Go to the Property Bar and select the To Curve button.

This converts all selected lines to curves.

·        Press the Escape key to deselect the nodes.

·        Select only one node. The control points follow the lines because this object was created with straight lines

Move a control point. Notice that you may also grab the line when the control points are close to the line. 

·        Group-select all the nodes. 

·        Go to the Property Bar and select the Smooth button. 

 
Smoothing bends straight lines by averaging out the distance between node points. This is a great technique to create curved poly lines. 

Connecting and disconnecting nodes

·       Select the blue line. 

·        Select the two end nodes.

Each segment has two nodes. 

·        Go to the Property Bar and select the Extend button.

·        Go to the Standard Toolbar and select the Undo button.

·        Select one of the other node points.

·        o to the Property Bar and select Break Path button.

 
This command is used to split the line at the selected node. 

·        Move one of the disconnected nodes.
The nodes are on top of each other. Zooming in helps to move one or the other.

Cusping node points

·        Zoom in close to the lower fish.
Make him look like the top shark. Use the Zoom level list on the Property Bar, the Zoom Tool from the F2 button, or the Zoom Tool from the Toolbar. 

·        Select the top fin of the fish with the Shape Tool.
Use the Un group All button if necessary. You cannot use the Shape Tool on a grouped object. Notice the   control points are already there. That is because this line was created using curved line segments. 

·        Select the top node point. 

·        Move one of the control points. Notice how difficult it is to get the proper shape. 

·        Go to the Standard Toolbar and select the Undo button. 

·        Be sure the top node point is still selected.

Reshaping rectangular objects

·        Select the blue rectangle.
Notice the nodes in each corner. This is a defined, closed object. 

·        Go to the Property Bar and click the Round Corners Together lock.  
With the lock open, the corners can be rounded one at a time. With the lock closed, the corners will round together. 

·        Click on one corner node.
Be sure only one node is selected. Notice the mouse cursor icon changes to the Shape Edit Tool cursor. 

·        Round the corner by pulling the node along the line that makes up the side of the rectangle.
Notice that the number of degrees in the arc is shown on the Property Bar. You can also enter the number in and change the corners so several rectangles match. Press the Enter key to apply the changes. 

·        Select the red rectangle. 

·        Go to the Property Bar and depress the Round Corners Together lock. 

·        Click on one corner node. 

·        Round the corners by pulling the node along the line that makes up the side of the rectangle. 

               All four corners round together in the same amount. As with the individual corner rounding, you can enter the arc measurement and press the Enter key to apply this change.  

 

Reshaping elliptical objects

·        Select the blue circle.
Notice an elliptical shape contains only one node point. 

·        Keeping the cursor outside of the circle, click and drag the node point.
This produces arcs. Once the object is reshaped a second node appears. 

·        Return the node to the original position. 

·        Repeat step 2, keeping the cursor inside the circle.
This will produce a pie-shaped object that shows the fill. Moving the pointer outside the circle creates an arc that does not show the fill. The fill is defined for the circle. 

·        Select the red circle.

 

·        Go to the Property Bar and click the middle button of the three shown here.

Virtual Segment Delete Tool

·        Select the clip art image.
Remember to use the Pick tool to select. 

·        Check the information on the status bar. 

·        Ungroup the image and notice the number of objects that make up the picture.

·        Press the Esc key to de-select all the objects.

·        Select the words For Sale.
Notice the selection indicator boxes and nodes. 

·        Press the delete key.
Notice that much more than the words For Sale are removed

·        Go to the Shape Edit Fly out and choose the last tool.
