End of Development

Development of PageMaker had flagged in the later years at Aldus, and by 1998 PageMaker had lost almost the entire professional market to the comparatively 3.3, released in 1992, and 4.0, released in 1996. Quark stated its intention to buy out Adobe and to divest the combined company of PageMaker to avoid anti-trust issues. Adobe rebuffed the offer and instead continued to work on a new page layout application code-named Shuksan, originally started by Aldus. Openly planned and positioned as a Quark killer this was released as 1.0 in 1999.

 The last major release of PageMaker was 7.0 in 2001, after which the product was seen as languishing on life support. Adobe ceased all development of PageMaker in 2004 and strongly encouraged users to migrate to In Design, initially via special In Design PageMaker Edition and PageMaker Plug-in versions that added PageMaker's data merge, bullet and numbering features to In Design, and provided Page Maker-oriented help topics, complimentary fonts and templates. From 2005 these features were bundled into In Design CS2, which was offered at half-price to existing PageMaker customers.

Release PageMaker

Version 1.2 for Macintosh was released in 1986 and added support for PostScript fonts built into or downloaded to the memory of other output devices. PageMaker was awarded an for Best New Use of a Computer in 1986.

Until May 1987 the initial Windows release was bundled with a full version of Windows 1.0.3, after that date a Windows-runtime with no task-switching capabilities was included. Thus, users who did not have Windows could run the application from.

PageMaker Upgrade History

In 1985 Aldus developed PageMaker for the Mac, the first desktop publishing application. The Windows version followed in 1987. Later acquired by Adobe, until the introduction of Adobe in Design it reigned as the favorite high-end alternative to QuarkXPress. Adobes versions begin with 5 and 6 earlier versions were Aldus. Versions 6.5 and 6.5 Plus differed in that the Plus marked the beginning of the marketing transition to a business application and included business-oriented templates and clip art not bundled with earlier versions. 

Version 7 of PageMaker added additional features important to business use such as the PDF import/export and merge options. Adobe recommends that instead of purchasing PageMaker, you should buy the newer software, In Design. In Design works on a more updated and modern code set, meaning it has more advanced features than PageMaker. Adobe claims In Design incorporates the best aspects of PageMaker with its own features, making it more compatible with modern technologies. Much like PageMaker software, In Design integrates well with other Adobe programs to give you an even larger feature set.

Adobe says the company will not release any new versions or upgrades to PageMaker's latest version 7.0.2. Adobe does, however, state that it will release patches if any security issues arise. Adobe claims that it still plans to offer support for PageMaker.

Color gamut and color management basics

Each device you use to create a publication the scanner, monitor, desktop printer, and printing press can display or reproduce a certain range of color. That range, or spectrum, of color is called the

gamut of the particular device. The central goal of hi-fi color publishing is to use more than four inks to expand the color gamut you can achieve on a press. For example, the PANTONE Haemachrome color system provides six inks modified versions of the CMYK inks as well as two new inks, orange and green to produce a wider color gamut.

Nowadays, many designers create color publications on open computer systems with components from different vendors that have different color gamuts. No matter what kind of color publication you’re creating, this fact raises the issue of how to get predictable color at each stage in your design process. The printing and computer industries have responded to this issue by developing Color Management systems, such as the Kodak Precision Color Management System that’s included in PageMaker 6.0. Many scanners monitor, and other hardware manufacturers record the gamut of their devices in a file called a device profile. A CMS uses these device profiles to map color information from one device color space to the next, so you can display and print consistent color no matter what system you’re on.

If you want to print a wider range of color, you need to capture images in as wide a color gamut as possible, and you need to keep track of the color space used to record the image through each step in your process. PageMaker Definition

A full-featured desktop publishing program for Windows and Macintosh from Adobe. PageMaker was the refactor standard in the graphics arts industry for many years for creating ads, brochures, newsletters and books of all sizes and kinds. Introduced originally for the Mac in 1985 by Aldus Corporation, it set the standard for desktop publishing. In fact, Paul Drainer, president of Aldus, coined the term. The PC version was introduced in 1987 for Windows 1.0 and was the first non-Microsoft Windows application. PageMaker was superseded by Adobe's In Design.

Use Guides in Adobe PageMaker

Guides are used to help visualize non printing areas, align text, and align images and other graphic elements on the page and to each other. Try these tips on how to make this process a little simpler or modify how guides work in Adobe PageMaker.

Graphics and text objects

Import images from graphic applications such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop software directly into PageMaker, or use drawing tools to create lines, rectangles and squares, circles and ellipses, and polygons to which you can apply a stroke and fill. These shapes can be self-contained, or they can be usedas frames that hold text or imported graphics.

Type text directly in PageMaker or import it from another application. You can manipulate a text block as an object for example, select, move, and resize it. In layout view, text is contained in text objects either a text block or a text frame. A text block is created with the text tool or by flowing text into columns. A text frame is created with a frame tool or by converting a drawn shape to a text block. When you edit text, you work with letters and words, but you can manipulate text objects in the same way you manipulate graphics as movable object.

Advanced word-processing capabilities

Type and format text directly in layout view, or take advantage of the story editor, a built-in word processor that makes it easy to create and edit text. Set tabs and indents, spell-check publications, insert tables, and perform other word-processing tasks in PageMaker. Once text is in PageMaker, it is part of a story. A PageMaker story is similar to an article in a newspaper. Several stories may appear on the same page and continue elsewhere on a different page in a publication. If you need to work on long publications, assemble multiple publications into a book so that you can work on them as a whole create a table of contents and an index, renumber pages, and print the book while retaining the ability to work on each publication independently. When you export a publication to Adobe PDF, you can automatically create bookmarks and hypertext links for a table of contents and index entries in Adobe PDF files.

Easy to use layout and design features

Insert placeholder frames for text and graphics. Lay out publications with ease by creating frames to hold text and graphics. Add nonprinting guides that help you position objects on pages precisely.

Master pages

In multipage publications, your design is more cohesive if each page is built on a master page.

Use master pages to specify and apply different page designs, such as margins, headers and footers, column guides, and backgrounds, within a single publication. Create, modify, and delete objects on master pages just as you would with any other objects.

Layers

Using layers, set up a single file for multiple versions of a publication, add annotations, and experiment with layouts by placing objects on different layers. By placing text on separate layers, you control which objects are visible and work faster by turning off the graphics layer.
